Coronal Magnetic Field Measurements through Gyroresonance Emission
نویسنده
چکیده
This article reviews the use of gyroresonance emission at radio wavelengths to measure coronal magnetic fields. The spiralling motion of electrons in the 200– 2000 G fields in the solar corona produces sufficient opacity to render the corona optically thick, making it easy to recognize such sources in microwave images from their coronal brightness temperatures. Where gyroresonance sources are present they may be used as sensitive probes of the magnetic field strength above active regions, and this unique capability is one of the strengths of radio observations. Typically a gyroresonance radio source shows the temperature on an optically thick surface of constant magnetic field within the corona. Since each radio frequency corresponds to a different magnetic field strength, the coronal structure can be “peeled away” by using different frequencies.

Radio Measurements of Coronal Magnetic Fields
The measurement of magnetic field strengths in the solar corona using radio observations is reviewed. This is a well established technique that exploits the fact that the electron gyrofrequency for typical coronal magnetic field strengths (100–2000 Gauss) lies in the radio frequency range. Opacity from the resulting gyroresonance emission from hot plasma above active regions allows the direct m...
متن کاملRadio Observations of Gyroresonance Emission from Coronal Magnetic Fields
We review the basic characteristics of thermal gyroresonance (also known as cyclotron) emission from solar active regions, and show how radio observations combined with our understanding of the basic mechanism can reveal much of the magnetic and thermal structure of the corona over active regions.

This paper 1 reviews the contrasting properties of radio and EUV/X{ray observations for the study of the solar atmosphere. The emphasis is placed on explaining the nature of radio observations to an EUV/X{ray audience. Radio emission is produced by mechanisms which are well-understood within classical physics. Bremsstrahlung tends to be dominant at low frequencies, while gyroresonance emission ...
متن کاملThe Solar Coronal Magnetic Field Measurements With SOLARC
Direct solar coronal magnetic field measurements have become possible since recent development of high-sensitivity infrared detection technology. The SOLARC instrument installed on Mt. The Fe 1075 nm forbidden coronal emission line (CEL) is potent...
متن کاملA New Precise Measurement of the Coronal Magnetic Field Strength
Magnetism dominates the structure and dynamics of the solar corona. Current theories suggest that it may also be responsible for coronal heating. Despite the importance of the magnetic field in the physics of the corona and despite the tremendous progress made recently in the remote sensing of solar magnetic fields, reliable measurements of the coronal magnetic field strength and orientation do...
